General/Deep Cleaning

Deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planning, is a very thorough cleaning of the tooth root surfaces from plaque and calculus. This procedure is recommended when a patient shows significant signs of gum disease, such as bleeding gums, pus, accumulation of calculus under the gum, deep gum pockets, and loss of bone.

The main cause of gum disease are the toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque. These toxins stimulate a chronic inflammatory response, in which the gum and bone that holds the tooth in place break down. This results in periodontal pockets that can become filled with more bacteria and toxins. If left untreated, these pockets will continue to deepen and cause further bone loss and gum recession. Without its foundation, the tooth will become loose, and may have to be removed.

This procedure is a cost effective and minimally invasive way to treat gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease, as well as the more severe form, periodontitis. For the latter, consequences could be more serious and the treatment may be more involved.

Following your deep cleaning, it is usually recommended to visit your dentist every three to four months for cleanings. These visits are especially important as periodontal disease can recur without proper follow up care.
